Since the early seventies, evaporative cooling towers have seen a major change in internal design. Particularly, the section devoted to water evaporation, the fill media, has gone from the traditional open/wide spaced splash design to the compact film evaporative fill. This change in design has been beneficial in a number of ways, but also problematic if not fully understood and treated properly. There has been considerable use in industrial plants, such as refineries, chemical and particularly in utility power stations. Yet, originally it was extensively used (and still is) in smaller air conditioning or factory assembled cooling towers and evaporative coolers.
