The paper reviews the literature on the control of filamentous iron bacteria (FIB) and compares some actual field experiences. FIB occur rarely, are often misdiagnosed, and usually have a catastrophic effect, plugging lines and equipment. Prior findings have supported residential chlorination as effective control. Actual case histories in this paper support this approach. Additional information is presented showing that heterotrophic population counts should not be used for evaluation or control of FIB. Microscopic examination of deposits is the surest means of affirming an FIB diagnosis.
