Empirical methods have their place in Science, Industry, Meteorology, etc. For example, daily weather forecasts are still to a large extent based on empirical methods, resulting in good forecasts at that. Heat transfer calculations were in earlier days also 
based on empirical methods. Hausbrand, a German engineer, published an early reference book listing recommended heat transfer rates for liquids, vapors and gases of all kinds and various operating conditions.
