This paper presents Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station's efforts to prevent water side cooling problems from becoming a limiting factor in maintaining full electrical power output during hot summer months. The situation at Vermont Yankee is somewhat unique due to both the design of the plant, and the operating restrictions placed upon it by the various regulatory agencies involved. Every plant will have its individual operating characteristics, and a variety of solutions may be appropriate; however, the efforts employed, and evaluations performed at Vermont Yankee can be used as a guide in developing programs for other plants to minimize water side fouling and optimize heat transfer.
