Condenser cooling in modern power plants, either fossil or nuclear fueled, involves the use of enormous quantities uf water. Protection of water as a natural resource requires that its quality and availability be carefully regulated. In cases where the sheer volume of wc1ter has not been available, or where thermal loads have been excessive for the receiving body of water, more satisfactory means of condenser cooling than once through open systems have been sought by utilities.
