The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant is located in the western end of.
Kentucky about 20 miles from Paducah. Electric power is supplied by TVA, primarily from the Shawnee Steam Plant located adjacent to the Paducah Plant, and by the Electric Energy, Inc. Plant located just across the Ohio River at Joppa, Illinois. Initial construction of the Paducah Plant was begun in 1951, and the Plant has been in continuous operation since early in 1952. Cooling towers play a prominent role in the landscape of the Paducah Plant. On a clear day these towers are visible for miles. When operating at rated power levels, sufficient water is evaporated from these cooling towers to cover 500 acres with an inch of water each day.
