Fungus attack of cooling tower wood was first observed along the Gulf Coast about 20 years ago. Chemical attack of wood due to excessive chlorination, high carbonate alkalinity, and rupture of wood fibres from sodium salt deposition had been long recognized and observed. When biological attack of wood was first observed a lot of 'confusion' existed in those plants where it occurred.
