TP26-04 Oxi-Plus: A Novel Oxidizing Biocides for Enhanced Microbial Control in Power Plant Cooling
Couldn't load pickup availability
Microbial control in power generation open evaporative cooling water systems remains a persistent challenge. This case study evaluates Oxi-Plus, a Mineral Oxychloride (MOCl) oxidizing biocide, applied at a Midwest coal-fired facility. MOCl is produced by reacting a liquid oxidant with a proprietary catalyst, forming a stable solution with strong oxidative power that is effective across a broad pH range, eliminating the need for on-site generation or acid addition. Field implementation demonstrated consistent biological control with measurable performance improvements, including a 1" Hg gain in condenser vacuum, increased power output, an 88% reduction in sodium hypochlorite usage, and elimination of sulfuric acid handling. These operational gains translated into annual cost savings exceeding $106,000 and a Scope 3 CO2 reduction of 1,827 metric tons. Offering stability, operational efficiency, environmentally benign degradation, and simple ORP-based monitoring, MOCl represents a next-generation approach to safer, more effective, and sustainable cooling water treatment for the power sector.
