TP25-20 A Novel Environmental Petentiator for Biocides in Induastrial Water Treatment

Stricter environmental regulations regarding toxicity and greenhouse gases emissions are a near reality leading the industrial water treatment market to evaluate new technologies, including the use of compounds from natural sources, aiming for less-toxic products with lower impact on the environment. While the development of a “green” biocide seems a utopic characteristic due to the intrinsic poisonously of these compounds, any strategy which enables its dosage reduction is very welcome. Solugen has developed a new generation of bio-based polyhydroxycarboxylic acids (PHC), produced by a novel chemi-enzymatic process that can help address these challenges, and are already in use to enable low-P formulations and also enhance azoles performance. Laboratory evaluations demonstrated that the concomitant dosage of these PHC with traditional biocides, such as Glutaraldehyde, Ammonium quaternary (Quats) and DBNPA allowed a significant reduction of consumption of these compounds by 50% to 75% enabling adequate performance against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, but when dosed individually these PHC did not demonstrate biocidal activity. This behavior was confirmed using different monitoring methods (culture media, ATP, BactiQuant) and detailed results will be presented on the extended paper. The authors expect this strategy would be an innovative way to improve microbial control, safety and the biodegradability/toxicity of industrial water discharges.
