This technical paper discusses the relevancy and importance of microbiological monitoring in critical closed loop cooling systems, such as in the case of the reviewed field application for a hot dip galvanizing line (HDGL). The HDGL process coats the steel strip with a protective zinc layer that allows it to sustain harsher conditions, valuable to the automotive industry and other industries. This operation is critical to provide differentiation and profitability for steel manufacturers. The paper will also highlight the merit of running follow-up on-site toxicant evaluations to ascertain the optimal biocide selection, feed approach, and dosage in order to achieve maximum kill and avoid re-colonization on heat transfer surfaces. Finally, the benefits of intermittent biodispersant as an adjutant to the biocide application regimen will be presented. A case study from a field application where a toxicant study and optimization program was conducted will be reviewed to support the recommendations of this paper.
