The Electric Power Research Institute has established a facility for cooling systems research near Atlanta, Georgia, the Water Research and Conservation Center. One of the objectives for facility research projects is to perform heat transfer testing. Equipment to simulate the steam condensing environment in thermal power generating plants was designed and procured and has been utilized to measure the effects of proposed anti-fouling internal condenser tube modifications (primarily applied coatings) on heat transfer. Additionally, the effect of steamside modifications to promote dropwise condensation on heat transfer has been measured. Equipment performance and results to-date will be discussed.
