07-03: Cooling Water - Optimal Control of Admiralty Corrosion Utilizing
Effective copper alloy and steel corrosion control, along with effective fouling control, can be major challenges in industrial cooling water systems. Major issues include achieving effective chlorine and copper alloy inhibitor feed rates and proper residual control. This paper provides a case history that describes how monitoring of cooling water chemistry, corrosion monitoring, and fouling monitoring were used to achieve effective performance results under difficult conditions. Advantages of using bleach and activated bromide to subsidize the gaseous chlorine application are discussed. Some of the monitoring tools used to determine adequate treatment concentrations and to optimize performance with respect to chemical costs and avoided costs are described.
