Direct contact cooling towers are used in various applications where the transfer of heat and mass between water and air is needed. Bulk air coolers (BAC) are direct contact devices that are extensively used in the deep-level mining industry to cool and dehumidify air, using chilled water, before entering the mine shaft. They operate mechanically in a similar manner to cooling towers with conventional cooling tower theory typically being used for design and modeling purposes. The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple method to improve the accuracy of performance modelling of bulk air coolers using experimentally determined mass transfer coefficient from cooling tower tests. In addition to providing a theoretical basis, experimental data is used to validate the proposed method.
